BACKGROUND ON SANDERS SHOOTING KVUE
Here's a look back at the Nathaniel Sanders shooting and the events that followed.
The shooting happened early in the morning of May 11, 2009. APD dashboard video from a back-up officer’s patrol car showed Officer Leonardo Quintana firing his weapon toward a car parked in the lot of the Walnut Creek Apartment Complex in Northeast Austin. Police say Sanders was in the backseat of the car officers believed was involved in reports of gunfire.
One of Quintana’s bullets hit and killed Sanders.
Between February 2008 and his death police arrested Sanders 9 times on charges ranging from drug possession to robbery by assault.
No criminal charges were filed against Officer Leonardo Quintana. The Austin Police Department did suspend Quintana in November 2009 for failing to turn on the video camera in his police unit.
Chief Art Acevedo fired Quintana in early May 2010 because of an unrelated DWI arrest in Leander in January.
