Patrol holds alcohol saturation event Jamestown Sun
The North Dakota Highway Patrol, Southeast Region along with the Oakes Police Department and the Dickey County Sheriff’s Office, conducted an alcohol saturation event on June 11-12 in Dickey County area. In conjunction with that event a sobriety checkpoint was conducted on North Dakota Highway 1 just south of Oakes. There were 178 vehicles that passed through the checkpoint and three drivers were evaluated for impairment.
No one was arrested for DUI during the checkpoint.
One vehicle was stopped for a traffic violation while attempting to avoid the checkpoint; one person in that vehicle was charged with consuming alcohol while under the age of 21.
Officers working the alcohol saturation event last weekend arrested three people for DUI and issued 47 citations for other traffic offences. One car/deer crash was investigated. No other crashes occurred in the area during this event.
In 2009, 45 people lost their life in alcohol-related crashes in North Dakota. To date in 2010, 14 people have lost their life in alcohol-related crashes. Historically, approximately 45 percent of all fatal crashes are alcohol related; this ranks the use of alcohol as the largest contributing factor, the patrol said.
