Novato father of crash victim pushes for tougher DUI law Marin Independent-Journal
The movement to enact "Melody's Law," named for the young Novato girl killed by a drunken driver, is gaining momentum in Sacramento.Aaron Osheroff's effort to have repeat drunken drivers stripped of their licenses permanently will be tested in mid-June when the topic is discussed before the state Senate Public Safety Committee.
Osheroff and his daughter, 9-year-old Melody Osheroff, were struck a year ago on San Marin Drive in Novato by motorcyclist Edward Schaefer. Melody died the next day of her injuries and Aaron Osheroff had one leg amputated just below the knee.
Osheroff plans to speak before the committee.
"For me, the $64,000 question is: Why wasn't something like this in place before?" he said. "I don't think a day goes by that I don't wonder about that."
Osheroff has an ally in Assemblyman Jared Huffman, D-San Rafael, who has authored a bill that toughens penalties for drivers who repeatedly drink and drive.
"This would get chronic offenders off the road for good,"
