Aussies seek NZ criminal records Stuff.co.nz

Australian authorities want access to Kiwis' criminal records amid fears that people are crossing the Tasman to continue lives of crime.

The move comes after the Australian Government raised concerns that too many Kiwis were trying to enter the country without declaring criminal convictions.

New Zealand police and immigration officials met their Australian counterparts to progress what official Australian documents said were "the issue of NZ criminals" at high-level Wellington talks late last year, spurring moves to share access to criminal histories.

In the past year, 157 Kiwis were turned away from Australia because of their criminal convictions, with 25 Australians turned away from our shores for the same reason.

Australian Immigration spokesman Phil Allen said there were concerns people were not disclosing convictions and getting through customs. They were normally discovered only after committing crimes.

"The more we can do to have that advanced notification of criminals across the Tasman, the better. And that goes for both countries. It's a specific issue of concern to Australia and New Zealand.
