Goolsby defeats Lee for N.C. Senate Republican nod StarNewsOnline.com
With the victory, Goolsby is now the GOP nominee to replace state Sen. Julia Boseman, D-New Hanover, in the 50-member Senate. Boseman decided to run for District Court judge instead of seeking re-election to the Senate, where she's in her third, two-year term.
Goolsby will face Democrat Jim Leutze, former chancellor at the University of North Carolina Wilmington, in the Nov. 2 election. Leutze didn't have a primary opponent. And Wilmington City Councilwoman Kristi Tomey is trying to get into enough signatures to appear on the November ballot as an unaffiliated candidate.
Goolsby said late Tuesday night that he was "stoked and pumped" and ready to move on to the November election.
He said he looked forward to trying to fix many of the state's problems.
"We're broke, we're in the hole, and we have no fresh ideas on how to fix anything," Goolsby said. "That's going to change."
Michael Lee said Tuesday night that he and his wife, Heidi, would continue to be involved in the community, despite the defeat.
