If Senate Republicans want to make an issue of U.S. Supreme Court nominee Elena Kagan's lack of prior experience as a judge, they better not count on Gov. Rick Perry for support.
As regular readers of this column know, I'm not a big fan of the governor. But I think he has made some very good judicial appointments.
At the head of the list, in my opinion, is Texas Supreme Court Chief Justice Wallace Jefferson, who had never put on a judge's robe before Perry put him on the Supreme Court to fill a vacancy. Jefferson had, however, earned a stellar reputation as an appellate specialist at a “boutique” firm in San Antonio.
In nearly nine years on the Texas Supreme Court, he has garnered national respect as well. His peers elected him first vice president of the Conference of Chief Justices, which puts him on track to become the organization's president later this year.
